Pay Attention-Cars Not Yet Self-Driving!

I was traveling on the interstate in Oklahoma City this last weekend when I noticed the message sign over the interstate read: "Pay Attention-Cars Not Yet Self-Driving". This is a great message by the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety in their campaign to help ensure the safety of all of us on the roadways in Oklahoma. Did you know distracted drivers not only put themselves at risk for a serous accident, but also endanger the rest of us, including our husbands, wives, and our children all because they could not wait to send a text, or check their email?

The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration) tells us that "Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed." For more information on distracted driving go to distraction.gov and read the alarming statistics.

There is no doubt that the time is coming when our vehicles are going to be self-driving. Some vehicles now have warning systems helping drivers to be aware of other vehicles and obstacles. Other vehicles are equipped with automatic braking and collision avoidance technology. Vehicle manufacturers are beginning to utilize collision avoidance technologies that will all become a part of the not-so-distant self-driving vehicle. But we are not simply there yet. The days of going to the car lot and picking out an autonomous vehicle are still several years away. And with that in mind, it takes us back to the message "Pay Attention-Cars are Not Yet Self-Driving."

Even if a vehicle is equipped with some of the newer technologies available to assist the drivers, distractions remain one of the top causes of injury accidents on our roads.
